|My work has grown out of the practice of figurative painting. I have spent numerous years with human figurative and representational painting. As I began to evolve as an artist, what seemed to come through most was my fluid ability to capture the essence of what I saw before me. I began developing form and composition intuitively. The greatest joy for me began to be brought forth by the gesture. From this gesture came the truest form of expression for me. It became the preferred practice rather than a novelty in self discovery. Armed with this new language, I began by using elements of my old visual reality, using what I knew or was comfortable with and altering these images into non-objective works. I bought old Polaroid land cameras, took photographs and tore them into pieces and re-organized them as starting points for paintings. Finally, I threw away all direct imagery and began working from the memory of experience of my environment. I found this way of working to prove more direct and it allowed the paintings to develop in a more natural way for me.
My purpose in painting is to capture the essence of my individual experience and create a link to others around me. It is a way of relating ideas, feelings; seizing a moment of rapture and expressing it through visual language for the viewer. My desire is to make connection with the viewer on a level that is pointed towards the universal. The paintings can be summed up as temporary manifestations of a continuing entity.
