Julia Clift

Artist Statement

My work overall reflects on current American culture, my own mediated perception of reality, and humankind’s fraught relationship with the natural world. My imagery stems from different regions of the country where I’ve lived or spent a significant amount of time, including Central Florida, the Midwest, the Appalachian Mountains, and the Philadelphia region. Many of my paintings are based on small collages that I construct from printed snapshots, tourism advertisements, and color swatches. Operating in a zone between abstraction and landscape, the paintings grapple with my own American mentality and imagine reconstructed worlds, offering up a sense of possibility.

My recent works on paper utilize natural inks that I make from foraged plants, as well as store-bought inks and paints. Complementing my larger canvases both visually and conceptually, these pieces meditate on ephemerality, on tensions between ecology and the built environment, and on the potential of hybrid, natural/human-made systems. The compositions deliberately synthesize disparate materials and techniques, bringing ink pours, experimental mark making, precise drawing, and trompe l’oeil painting into concert.
