She pursued graduate studies in the M.F.A. program at the Tyler School of Art of Temple University majoring in painting. She continued her studies in design at Philadelphia College of Art and attended the Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockport. In a career spanning over thirty-five years, Kerns won recognition for her artistic endeavors through juried shows in the Southwest, served as a freelance photographer, and founded a highly successful design studio recognized throughout the United States for excellence in custom interior designs for the marine industry. Her firm has served as an exclusive subcontractor for Viking Yachts for three decades. In 1997, she opened the Kerns Collection, a boutique specializing in art-to-wear, contemporary craft, jewelry and art for the home. Kerns maintains a studio in Chestertown, Maryland and currently devotes her energies exclusively to her painting.
